John Morris-Jones (/m/03g10t)

Sir John Morris-Jones was a Welsh grammarian, academic and poet. He was born at Llandrygarn, Anglesey, and educated at Friars School, Bangor. Whilst at Jesus College, Oxford, Morris-Jones co-founded Cymdeithas Dafydd ap Gwilym. In 1895 he became Professor of Welsh at Bangor University, a post he held until his death. His works, Welsh Orthography and A Welsh Grammar, Historical and Comparative: phonology and accidence, added to the status of the language. He was also founder and editor of the literary journal, Y Beirniad, published between 1911 and 1919. Morris-Jones was knighted in 1918. He died at Bangor. The Welsh-medium hall of residence at Bangor University is named Neuadd John Morris-Jones in his honour.
